Beer Runs: Top 5 Beer Related Races in Wisconsin

The marriage of beer and racing is a beautiful thing.  It’s a rare marathon that doesn’t include a beer station at the finish.  And it’s only logical that runners and other athletes would want to reward themselves after sweating it out for a 5k, marathon, or 100 mile ride.  Hell, one macro-brewery has made the active lifestyle the central component of its brand identity.

Fortunately for us Wisconsites, we have several great brewery or beer themed races to enjoy.  Here’s a list of my favorites:

Point Bock Run in Steven Point. Sponsored by Point Brewery and held each March in Steven Point, WI, this 5 mile race is fast, flat and popular.  Registration is limited to 2000 people, so sign up early(I missed out this year)

Tyranena Beer Run: Put on by Lake Mills-based Tyranena Brewery in November.  Choose from the Half Barrell(1/2 marathon) or quarter barrell(1/4 marathon), or just chill on the brewery grounds and enjoy a Rocky’s Revenge.  The race begins and ends at the brewery, where finishers enjoy post-race beer, lasagna, and music. The course is occasionally challenging, but completely gorgeous, taking you around scenic Lake Mills and the Glacial Drumlin Trail.  I ran this last year, and while I admittedly did PR and the weather was perfect, it was still probably the most fun I’ve ever had a race.

Beer Belly Two: Held Sunday, June 26, 2011 in Suamico, this 2 mile run/walk features three water/beer/rootbeer stops along the course. Go all out, or take it easy and enjoy your beer en route, either way, this race benefits great charities in Northeastern Wisconsin: The Golden House, Families of Children with Cancer, The Ecumenical Partnership for Housing and the Brown County Food and Hunger Network.

Haunted Hustle Marathon: The Summit Credit Union Haunted Hustle Marathon, 10K & Half Marathon is held in Middleton, WI October 29, 2011.  Capital Brewery is a major sponsor of the event, which features a scenic course through Middleton, halloween themed aid stations, a costume division, and a post-race awards celebration at Capital Brewery.

Locust Street Beer Run: If you’re looking to kick off Milwaukee’s Locust Street Festival this June 12 with 1.8 miles of hard running, beer chugging action, look no further.  The race snakes through Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, where runners and walkers will pass four MANDATORY beer stops.  Of course you don’t have to drink, but only drinkers are eligible for prizes.  Sounds like a fun event, and if they’re serving brew from sponsor Lakefront Brewery, count me in.  The festival does not have a site up for 2011 yet, but i’ve confirmed it is a go as always.
